How I Started
You probably remember the old joke
about the two caterpillars. A butterfly goes overhead and one
caterpillar says to the other “You’ll never get me up in one of
those!”
Well my interest in Astrology
started as a positive variant of this scenario. Around the age
of five I was staring up at an advertisement in a London
Underground station. I forget what was being advertised but the
picture was of a giant Scorpion – complete with pincers and
sting, and resplendent in its shiny armour. I remember thinking
“I’d like to be one of those”. A few years later this wish was
realised when I discovered that the Sun, Moon & Mercury occupied
that sign in my birth-chart.
The next astrological awakening
came after I moved to Cornwall in the late 1980s, in the shape
of a local evening class. It happened to be a group dominated by
water signs. There were three sun-sign Scorpios with Cancer
rising (like me), two Pisceans and a Cancerian tutor. That group
really ‘clicked’ and the enthusiasm generated has kept us
friends and active students of Astrology to this day. We all
joined the Plymouth Astrology Group, which still meets monthly
and organises weekend workshops with prominent astrologers each
October.
Elected a member of the APA (as it
then was) in the 1990s, my professional practice has grown
steadily since then. As well as face to face sessions with local
clients, I regularly give readings via the telephone and email.
How Can Astrology Help?
Many people who request
birth chart or compatibility readings for themselves, relatives
or friends will do so in a light-hearted spirit - perhaps out of
curiosity or for a gift. Others may be looking to an Astrologer
for specific advice or for reassurance in times of trouble.
If a person is troubled by
present or childhood trauma they may have difficulty putting
their problems in perspective or even beginning to communicate
their feelings to someone else. Yet there is something about the
abstraction of an Astrology chart and the universal nature of
the symbols it contains which sometimes restores a feeling of
connectedness. People who feel victimised by life and alone in
meaningless suffering may, through pondering the interplay of
ideas represented by their charts, decide there is a pattern and
meaning to their experiences that was previously unclear.
Astrology is unlikely to offer answers to an individual’s major
life-challenges “on a plate”, but it can suggest ways forward.
It can also forewarn of challenges ahead. Quite often the
difficulties that have prompted a person to ask for a reading
are traceable to planetary 'transits' activating areas of stress
in the birth chart. So another way Astrology can help is by
putting the uncomfortable processes into a probable time-frame.
Traumatic experiences begin and reach their peak - but they also
come to an end.
